"Methinks ye shouldst take what is given when proffered by an elf. They have secrets aplenty, as well they should, and take care ye don't pry too hard. Inquisitiveness is admired by the People, but rude investigation is not, and ye'd crack the shell of a dragon turtle with your teeth sooner than gain secrets from a slighted elf."
-Elminster of Shadowdale

I. Author's Notes

Update 04/07/2003:
This is the final version of A Temporal Chronology of the Primes, at least in its present HTML format. All future timelines will be presented in an XML format similar to this: Xoth Jakolor These smaller, more modular XML timelines can be combined like building blocks to form larger, more encompassing chronologies. An example of this future direction can be seen here: A Grand History of the Realms

The idea of traveling from one campaign world to another has been a subject of fascination and debate among many long-time fans of Dungeons & Dragons. Planar travel and Spelljamming are the most common methods of breeching the vast distance between worlds. What has been missing, however, has been the historical connection between campaign worlds. What events are unfolding on Krynn in the Dragonlance setting during the Time of Troubles in the Forgotten Realms setting?

A Temporal Chronology of the Primes is a timeline that links events from D&D's popular campaign worlds into a single historical accounting. The events that link the campaign worlds can be found in Appendix I. All events in this timeline were gathered from official DUNGEONS & DRAGONS® sourcebooks, novels, comics, and magazines. Recent entries into the chronology have been marked with the product id of its associated sourcebook. A listing of these referenced sourcebooks can be found in Appendix II.

The unknown chronicler of this timeline is a resident of the world of Abeir-Toril (Ai-BEER-toh-RILL) in Realmspace. This naturally lends itself to a bias on the history of the Forgotten Realms, and as such all events are dated in Dalereckoning.

II. Myron X. Bognod III

3rd day of Marpenoth, Year of the Unstrung Harp (1371 DR)

To Ulraunt, Keeper of the Tomes, does Myron X. Bognod III send greetings.
My lord, I hope all is well within the hallowed halls of Candlekeep. I have recovered a most interesting and valuable artifact. On Dragon Rock, among the debris of Gaspar Reclamations, an ancient tome was discovered. The libram not only contains the history of our own blue jewel Abeir-Toril, but the histories of our neighbor worlds as well.
The details of the world of Athas are of particular interest. My peers in the Emerald Brotherhood have confirmed that Darkspace was sealed over three millennia ago by Netherese arcanist Proctiv. How the history of Athas came to be scribed in this tome is still unknown.
The unknown chronicler also discloses the history of the Demiplane of Dread, though I view the entries with a great deal of suspicion. Many sages have lost their lives attempting to divine the secrets of that dark realm.
My brothers and I shall arrive at Candlekeep within the month to deliver the chronology into your security. Until then, take care old friend.

20th day of Hammer, Year of Rogue Dragons (1373 DR)

To Ulraunt, Keeper of the Tomes, does Myron X. Bognod III send greetings.
My lord, it is with some pleasure that I write to you today. As you might expect, our excavation of Ammarindar has led to recovery of some fascinating treasures. A jewel among them is the Xoth Jakolor, a collection of thirty-two stone slates, upon which is etched the most detailed recording of dwarven history known to exist.
Particuarly facinating is the mention of a hereto-unknown race of dwarves known as the Urdunnir. The history claims that Urdunnir can walk through earth and stone as if it were air and shape metal and stone with their hands.
Until next, take care old friend.

III. A Temporal Chronology of the Primes [6th-Edition]

[Era: The Days of Thunder]  Unknown to Unknown
This is the time of the fabled Creator Races, when many gods came to the consciousness of mortals, and many races still hid in caves.  No mention can be found of elves, dwarves, and other races in this time.  Still, their absence on ancient cave paintings is hardly sufficient evidence to say that they did not exist in the Realms.
Dragonlance Era: THE AGE OF STARBIRTH (Unknown to 9000 PC)
Dark Sun Era: THE BLUE AGE

Unknown
1.Water covers most of Athas, and a sapphire sun fills the sky.  Halflings are the only intelligent race.  Halfling society, led by the nature-masters, develops into a highly advanced civilization.  (Unknown, Dark Sun)

[Era: The Dawn Age/The Time of Dragons]   Unknown to -24000 DR
Dragons and giants rule Toril at this time; elves and dwarves settle in small but growing communities all over Faerūn.  The dwarves overthrow the giants and start their empires.  Toward the end of this time, the elves start doing the same against the dragon overlords of this era.  This age draws to an abrupt close with the Sundering.

Unknown
1. Survivors of the Kingdom of Tintageer (Kingdom of Faerie) summon the power of elvish High Magic and escape from Faerie to Toril.  Their new home, a large forested continent, they call Faerūn, the One Land.  [Novel: Evermeet: Island of Elves]

c. -25000 DR
1. First mentions of Ironfang Keep on the Dragons' Sea appear in draconic legends.

c. -24000 DR
1. (~) The Sundering.  Hundreds of High Magi gathered in the heartland of Faerūn at the Gathering Place.  Ignoring the lesson learned from the destruction of Tintageer centuries earlier, the High Magi cast a spell designed to create a glorious elven homeland.  As the Day of Birthing dawned, the spell reached its apex.  The unbridled force of the spell sunders Faerūn, the one land, apart.   As a result, hundred of cities are washed away, thousands of elves lie dead, and the face of Abeir-Toril is changed forever.  The name Faerūn, no longer the one land, was given to largest continent.  Evermeet, Island of Elves, is created.   The Tree of Souls is given to the elves.  [Novel: Evermeet: Island of Elves]

[Era: The First Flowering]  -24000 to -12000 DR
The elves reach their peak here, more than 15,000 years ago.  The great elven civilizations of Faerūn include Aryvandaar, Illefarn, Ilythiir, Keltormir, Miyeritar, and Shantel Othreier.  With the elves' success against the orcs and dragons and giants, the other races thrive in safety and begin the slow climb on civilization.

-23900 DR
1.The forest community of Sharlarion, survived the Sundering nearly complete.  These fortunate elves increased their number and spread into the surrounding forest, hills, and lowlands.  Soon the elvish kingdom of Aryvandaar (Present Day: High Forest) was established. [Novel: Evermeet: Island of Elves]

-23600 DR
1. Establishment of the first elvish settlements of Shantel Othreier (Present Day: Green Fields)

-17800 DR
1. Establishment of the great elvish settlements of Keltormir (Present Day: Forest of Tethyr which spanned all of Tethyr, Amn, Erlkazar, and Calimshan) by moon and green elves, seeking peace and simple lives away from the strife of the other elven realms.

-17500 DR
1. The independent sylvan elf realms of Thearnytaar, Eiellūr, and Syņrpiir open discussions of unifying the elves of the Satyrwwod (Present Day: Thornwood-Chondalwood).

-17100 to -16800 DR
1. War of Three Leaves.  The unification of the Satyrwood is thwarted by dark elven Ilythiiri spies and assassins, killing their leaders and framing opposing heirs, driving the three realms to a multifront war.  Ilythiir's influence is not discovered for centuries.

c. -17000 DR

[Era: The Crown Wars]  -12000 to -9000 DR
The Crown Wars of the Elves erupted more than a dozen millennia ago, pitting nearly four generations of elf against elf.  The two greatest events of the Crown Wars that still have impact on the Realms of any era are the Dark Disaster and the Descent of the Drow.  The Dark Disaster utterly destroyed the forest realm of Miyeritar, leaving the blasted plains that are now the High Moors.  Perhaps due to the savagery of the Crown Wars or other factors long lost to time, the Dark Elves became corrupt during this era, broke away from their brethren, and after much warfare and cruelty they descended beneath the planet's surface to become the Deep Elves, the drow.

c. -12000 DR
1. The first dwarven settlements appear in the great mountain range known as the Yehimal, which lies at the juncture of the three great continents of Faerūn, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara. From there, the earliest dwarves migrated into all three lands. [885780000 p.8]
2. The first great kingdom of the dwarves of Faerūn is centered in the great cavern of Bhaerynden, deep beneath the Shaar. [885780000 p.8] [TSR11509 p.19]
3. From the great migration, one isolated branch of dwarves settle amid the isolated peaks of the Novularond, eventually becoming known as the arctic dwarves. [885780000 p.8]

-12000 DR
1. The Crown Wars / Rise of the Vyshaantar Empire.  After centuries of fruitless diplomacy, the impatient, grasping rulers of Aryvandaar attack Miyeritar and begins putting political pressure on Shantel Othreier to join them or suffer the same fate.

-11851 DR
1. Discovery of the nature-benders, corrupt nature-masters who experiment with life in immoral ways. (4th World's Age - Ocean's Slumber (Y53), Dark Sun)

-11800 DR
1. Miyeritar militarily occupied and annexed by Aryvandaar, though a number of clans and strongholds resist and continue to fight.  Many elves of Illefarn, despite its officially-neutral stance, provide secret safehavens for Miyeritari refugees.

-11700 DR
1. Dragons set the southern expanse of Shantel Othreier aflame, separating the soon-to-be-called Wyrmwood from its greater body.  Tethir, kin of Keltormir (soon to be called "the Dragonslayer"), single-handedly slays two ancient red wyrms of the Ridge and saves many elves of his own Keltormir and Shantel Othreier.  Tethir's stand earned the elves the respect of the dragons, who had previously dismissed them as ignorant, two-footed cattle.
2. The Second Crown War flares up in answer to the aggressions of Aryvandaar.   Ilythiir rises up and viciously strikes out at any who support the gold elves of the north.  Its nearest neighbor of Orishaar, as a major trade partner with Aryvandaar, falls swiftly in a brutal surprise attack.
3. Humanity slowly builds in the clearings created over time by the dragon fires. [TSR9561]

-11659 DR
1. War between the nature-masters and the nature-benders until Ral's Vengeance of this age.  In the end, the nature-benders are defeated along with their cleric allies. (7th World's Age - Island's Agitation (Y14), Dark Sun)

-11600 DR
1. The Ilythiiri destroy Syņrpiir by fire, separating them from their allied neighbors and burning their homes to the ground.

-11584 DR
1. Nature-masters of Ty'agi attempt to expand the lifeforce of the ocean and accidentally create the Brown Tide, which brings about the end of the Blue Age. (8th World's Age - Ral's Defiance (Y12), Dark Sun)

-11583 DR
1. Surviving nature-masters create the Pristine Tower to destroy the Brown Tide.   This action changes the sun from blue to yellow, destroying the halfling civilization and bringing about The Rebirth. (8th World's Age - Freind's Reverence (Y13), Dark Sun)

-11584 DR
1. The new races of The Rebirth - humans, gnomes, dwarves, elves, and others - appear across the face of Athas.  Great cities such as Tyr, Bodach, and Guistenal are founded to house the new races.  Last use of "Island" and "Ocean" on the World's Age calendar.  (8th World's Age - Island's Agitation (Y14), Dark Sun)

Dark Sun Era: THE GREEN AGE

-11522 DR
1. Ruler of the rhul-thraun, High Lord Rhan Thes-onel, leaves the Jagged Cliffs to locate any rhulisti remaining on Athas.  He never returns.  (8th World's Age - King's Slumber (Y74), Dark Sun)

-11518 DR
1. World's Age calendar renamed to King's Age calendar by rulers of various cities.   Dates remain the same.  (9th King's Age - Ral's Fury (Y1), Dark Sun)

-11500 DR
1. Thearnytaar and Eiellūr band together and declare war on Ilythiir, decrying their use of fire and wanton destruction far more than the power plays of the northern elves.  They fight a holding action, preventing the Ilythiiri from advancing north.

-11474 DR
1. First reported sighting of the Messenger by a Tyrian astronomer.  The comet appears every 45 years until the 190th King's Age - Enemy's Slumber when the cycle is mysteriously broken.  (9th King's Age - Ral's Vengeance (Y45), Dark Sun)

-11450 DR
1. The Sable Wars: Thearnytaar and Eiellūr, with minimal allies from Keltormir and Shantel Othreier, invade Ilythiir, intent on destroying or reforming the dark elves before more realms fall.  More than half their forces are decimated by the corrupt magics of the dark elves.

-11400 DR
1. Fall of Eiellūr as the Ilythiiri once again use fire to destroy their realm around them and isolate them from aid.  They also were helped by traitor green elves, who thought their appeasement actions could help restore peace.

-11322 DR
1. Birth of Rajaat, the War-Bringer.  (11th King's Age - Enemy's Fury (Y43), Dark Sun)

-11300 DR
1. End of the First Crown War: Miyeritar conquered by Aryvandaar.

-11200 DR
1. Thearnytaar falls to the savage and now-unrepentant dark elves, who use enslaved monsters and undead to occupy the thorn-and-bramble choked woods.   Ilythiir now directly skirmishes with the major realm of Keltormir along its eastern and southern expanses.

c. -11000 DR
1. Dwarves from the great stronghold of Bhaerynden begin to establish the first holds of what will be Deep Shanatar in the southern Underdark (Present Day: Alimir Mountains, Lake of Steam). [TSR9561]

-10900 DR
1. The Third Crown War erupts as accords finally fail between Shantel Othreier and Aryvandaar.

-10700 DR
1. Battle of the Gods' Theatre.  The Gods' Theater (Present Day: The Tunlands) on eastern Shantal Othreier is the site of one of the largest and costliest of all the Crown Wars' battles.  Nearly 70,000 elves died at the hands of elven and orcish enemies, as an orc horde 100,000 strong fell upon the already-embattled elves.   Aryvandaar won the day, and occupied the northern half of Shantel Othreier.

-10600 DR
1. Shantel Othreier conquered by the Vyshaantar Empire of Aryvandaar after the mysterious death of Coronal Ynloeth.  Guerilla fighting and rebel mages arise in parts of Miyeritar and the newly conquered territories.

-10500 DR
1. The Dark Disaster.  Miyeritar is engulfed in killing storms, which reduce this entire forest and realm into barren wastelands in three months.   While no proof could ever be found, many believe the High Mages of Aryvandaar inflicted the Dark Disaster on Miyeritar.
2. Shock over the Dark Disaster established an uneasy four decades of peace, as nearly every elf of Faerūn shrank back in awe and horror from what havoc the Crown Wars wrought.

c. -10450 DR
1. The Fourth Crown War.  Ilythiir's seething counter-attack to avenge Miyeritar sees their open use of the corrupt powers of Ghaunadar and other dark, evil gods for the first time.

-10300 DR
1. The elves of Keltormir, opposed on both sides by the Vyshaan of Aryvandaar and the dark elven clan Hune of Ilythiir, strategically withdraw from eastern Keltormir, holding their lines at Highlands' Edge.

-10270 DR
1. The Stone and Claw Campaigns.  The withdrawal of Keltormir's forces to close and defend its own borders pitted the forces of Aryvandaar and Ilythiir against each other.  They soon closed ranks and fought incessantly for two centuries.   Battles raged across the giant-infested mountains and wemic-claimed plains north of Keltormir.

-10110 DR
1. In opposition to the corrupt dark elves of Ilythiir and their continued destruction of the forested elven homelands by fire (an elven enemy of long-standing), over 1,000 priests and High Mages in neutral Illefarn and other free areas spend decades in fervent prayer for salvation by Corellon Larethian and the Seldarine gods.

-10100 DR
1. Through enslaved dragons and other powers, the dark elves of Ilythiir engulf all of Shantal Othreier in flames, destroying over 70% of its trees over the course of 50 years.

-10000 DR
1. Descent of the Drow: Corellon's magic, as directed through his priests and High Mages, transforms the dark elves, whether the corrupt Ilythiiri or others, into the drow.  Whether by magic or by the weaknesses that banish them from the sunlit lands, all drow retreat within two month's passing into the Underdark.
2. Elves are summoned by the Seldarine to the site that becomes Elven Court one month after the Descent of the Drow, to settle differences and restore peace among the elves.

-9900 DR
1. Aryvandaar's covert persecution of High Mages and priests begins, as they attempt to destroy or control any who might somehow force their descent as they did the drow.  While not destroyed utterly, Illefarn & its colony in the Llewyrrwood is annexed by Arvynandaar as its nobility of priests and High Mages died under the persecution of the increasingly crazed Coronal Giilvas Vyshaan.  Many elves of both lands flee to the remnants of Shantel Othreier.

-9800 DR
1. The Vyshantaar Empire's forces occupy all elven realms (save Keltormir) from the High Forest of Aryvandaar to the sweltering southern forests of ilythiir.  They begin the colonization and settlement of Evermeet.
2. A large force of Llewyrr elves escapes the oppressive mainland and resettle in isolation and safety among the mountains of the Moonshae Islands.  Their new land becomes Synnoria, after the elfqueen who led the Llewyr to this island sanctuary.

c. -9600 DR
1. Rise of the first drow civilizations in the Underdark beneath southern Faerūn.  Their constant harassment of the Vyshantaar forces over the next five centuries help prevent their annexing Keltormir or any other lands.

-9200 DR
1. The Fifth Crown War: The First Proclamation of Elven Court leads to the revolt of the nobles of Aryvandaar and the last Crown War begins.  The Elven Court, the Seldarine priesthoods, and the long-hidden High Mages restore pockets of resistance and freedom across the entire Vyshantaar Empire, fragmenting the armies and nobles to limit their coordination.

-9000 DR
1. The Fifth Crown War ends with the utter defeat of the Vyshaan and the dissolution of Aryvandaar.  Much of the High Forest is abandoned for an age, leaving the forest open so the gods might restore its peace.
2. The Wandering Years of elven colonization begin.  Many elves begin migrating back to Elven Court in its eastern forest.  Illefarn and Keltormir are the sole remaining civilizations to emerge intact from the Crown Wars.
3. Drow overwhelm the dwarves of Bhaerynden and take their rift-city for their own.

[Era: The Rise of Civilization/The Founding Time]  -9000 to -3859 DR
This era signals the rise of all the humanoid civilizations, as the many dragons and giants were long overthrown and the elven wars no longer loomed over everyone as a threat.  The elven realms of Evereska and Evermeet grow by colonization along with other realms, from the human Unther or Coramshan to the dwarven realms of High Shanatar or Oghrann.

-8800 DR
1. One tale, "Inferno," tells of a great drought lasting two summers.   After an attack by a flight of red dragons on the center of the great elven forest of Keltormir, the dragon fire sparked a forest fire that raged out of control.  This fire extinguished four entire clans of elves, eleven giant settlements, at least four green dragons, and thousands of miles of woodlands.  The once-unified elves of Keltormir splintered into a number of separate clans.

-8600 DR
1. Evereska founded in secret by surviving clans of the former Shantel Othreier, Miyeritar, Orishaar, and Eiellūr as an elven safehaven in the woods east of Aryvandaar.

-8500 DR
1. Keltormir's Fall.  Due to fire-sundered and otherwise ravaged homelands, Keltormir dissolves into three separate forests: The Wyrmwood, Darthiir Wood (Present Day: Forest of Mir), and the Forest of Tethir.

-8100 DR
1. Eight dwarf deep realms unite and form the great empire of Shanatar.  The empire is ruled from the Wyrmskull Throne in Alatorin's Brightaxe Hall.  Within 150 years, trade is underway with surface elves. [TSR9561]

-8000 DR
1. Founding of Semberholme.

Dragonlance Era: THE AGE OF DREAMS (9000 to 1018 PC)

c. -8000 to -7500 DR
1. Choosing Homes.  Ogres, first to awaken, claim Krynn's lofty mountains.  Elves withdrew to the forest to live in quiet harmony.  But to humans fall the plains.  Exposed to the savage winds and rains, these folk grow savage as well.  (c. 9000-8500 PC, Dragonlance)

-7950 DR
1. The dwarves and elves established trade agreements between  Shanatar and the elves of Tethir, Darthiir Wood, and Wyrmwood. [TSR1159a]

-7943 DR
1. The thri-kreen of Athas, a previously thought unintelligent race, migrate from the Crimson Savanna to the Tyr Region.  Though short-lived and alien in appearance, the thri-kreen possess great wisdom and insight.  The king of Tyr welcomes them with open arms.  The thri-kreen give no reason for the migration.  (55th King's Age - Ral's Reverence (Y34), Dark Sun)

-7800 DR
1. A large force of Djen arrive in the areas around present-day Calimport.  Whether they came from the Elemental Plane of air or another location is unknown.  The power of the djinn, led by the great noble djinni Calim, could not be denied. Within a few short months, they build their first city.  Within a year, the Calim Empire has begun. [TSR1159a][TSR9561]

-7790 DR
1. Calimport falls before a flight of dragons.  Calim begins a campaign against the dragons of the Marching Mountains and succeeds in either eradicating them or driving them north from the peaks. [TSR9561]

-7125 DR
1. Mareet, ruler of Saragar, is visited by a time-traveler from the future.  He tells the king of appending doom to Athas before disappearing.  Obsessed with the warning, Mareet orders his two most powerful psions to breach the time stream and determine the nature of the warning.  They are later joined by a third psion.  (66th King's Age - Wind's Defiance (Y5), Dark Sun)

-7105 DR
1. The psions breach the time barrier and learn of the impending Cleansing Wars, Rajaat, and defiling magic.  Mareet wants to warn all of Athas, but the psions disagree and take control of their leader.  The three use their formidable powers to shield Saragar from the rest of the world.  The Mind Lords are born.  (66th King's Age - Desert's Slumber (Y25), Dark Sun)
